October 2016 LCSC - Combustion and Safety Issues

The Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the October monthly program Combustion and Safety Issues -- on Friday, October 21.

The keynote speaker will be Brian Baesel, general manager, CEC Combustion. Baesel is a professional engineer who specializes in the design and field inspection of industrial combustion equipment. His presentation will cover the top 10 issues relating to combustion equipment safety. It also will focus on lockout, tag out and verification issues involving natural gas and fuels. He is a member of two national standard committees (NFPA 85, NFPA 86) and has helped to develop several Fortune 100 corporate combustion programs. He will cover the issue of interlocking testing which is misunderstood. It actually is the law according to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. He also will cover important natural gas safety and isolation issues. Prior to joining CEC Combustion, Baesel worked at a foundry and for a natural gas utility. The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites LaMalfa, with registration beginning at 11:15 a.m. The cost of the event is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Reservations may be made online at the LCSC web site listed below. The event is sponsored by: ---Lake Health ---HzW Environmental Consultants ---Lake County Chambers of Commerce ---EA Group

BWC announces $56.6 million in savings through the SID

BWC’s Special Investigations Department (SID) released its Fiscal Year 2016 Annual Report highlighting its efforts to deter, detect, investigate and prosecute workers' compensation fraud. They announced the SID identified $56.6 million in savings for the State Insurance Fund over the past year due to workers’ compensation fraud committed by claimants, employers and medical providers. Recovered funds will go back to the State Insurance Fund to care for workers injured in Ohio. The report includes an overview of the statistics and SID’s strategies for preventing and detecting fraud. However, enforcement is not the only method SID uses to raise awareness of workers’ compensation fraud. The SID also promotes its work by means of articles in periodicals, presentations and social media. People may stay up to date on the latest from SID by following the BWC Blog, liking our Facebook page and following the SID on Twitter. The SID reminds concerned supporters to report suspected workers’ compensation fraud by calling 1-800-644-6292 or visiting bwc.ohio.gov

BWC plans system changes in November

To modernize operations and improve customer service, BWC will replace its core claims and policy management systems this November. The transition to this new system will occur over Veterans’ Day weekend, Nov. 10 – 14. Beginning the afternoon of Nov. 10, many BWC systems, including web and phone services, will be unavailable. In addition, some employer-related systems will have limited functionality beginning at 5 p.m. Nov. 9. The BWC expects to resume normal operations on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Specific information on outages will be forthcoming as the transition date approaches. In the meantime, the BWC encourages customers to review deadlines and complete any time-sensitive transactions in advance of the transition. For information throughout the transition, make sure to follow the BWC on Twitter @OhioBWC. The goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible for customers. This includes ensuring the transition does not disrupt compensation for injured workers. Steps the BWC has taken to minimize disruption include thorough system testing, extensive employee training and practice, and timing the transition with a three-day holiday weekend.
