Mental Health & Addiction - The Impact on Workplace Safety

The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the February virtual/webinar program ---  Back to the Basics - Understanding How Mental Health Issues & Addiction Impact Safety in the Workplace  -  with keynote speaker Sandra Tenkku, Community Outreach Specialist, Lake County ADAMHS Board.

The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022.  This training event is provided to you by the LCSC steering committee.

The presentation will continue with the theme established for this year "Back to the Basics" and cover issues employers (and employees) need to be aware of regarding the impact of mental health issues and addiction on safety in their workplace.

The program is aimed at presenting a brief overview; review; and definition of "behavioral health" and mental illness and/or substance use disorders. This will then be framed in the context of "workplace safety" and how it is increasingly relevent and impactful on companies.

Tenkku has been working in the field of behavioral and social services for 15 years. As the community outreach specialist for the ADAMHS board Tenkku coordinates and leads the Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition. She also coordinates the Trauma Response Team and the Community Alliance of Law Enforcement and Mental Health Services Committee.

The program will delineate how behavioral health influences the company's bottom line, the firm's absenteeism rate, workforce safety and workforce morale. One in five employees will experience mental illness and one in seven will experience substance use disorders. And yet, a very small percentage of these employees get the required treatment; much of this do to the lingering stigma associated with these behavioral health issues.

Most employees dealing with these issues do not feel they have an easy, safe and confidential way at the workplace to access a comfortable conversaton about behavioral health. However, it is becoming increasingly more vital for companies to address these issues.

Tenkku is a certified trainer in Mental Health First Aid, QPR, Signs of Suicide; and is trained in a number of other evidence-based programs.

The program will address specific illnesses (with symptoms) and give examples of how behavioral health issues impact job performance and workplace safety.

Intel is coming to Ohio!

Intel, a great American company, is bringing its most advanced chip manufacturing operation in the world to Ohio. This project -the largest single private sector investment in Ohio history and an entirely new business sector for the state and the Midwest - will have monumental positive impacts for the nation and all of Ohio.

This initial investment of over $20 billion will be used to build two chip manufacturing facilities. This operation will generate more than 20,000 jobs for Ohioans including 3.000 intel jobs and 7,000 construction jobs.

10% rate cut for public employers

Ohio's public employers will pay nearly $17 million less in workers' compensation insurance premiums next year to the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) thanks to a rate cut that went into effect Jan. 1, 2022. The reduction represents a statewide average. The actual premium change for an individual public entity will differ based on multiple factors, including employer type or classification, payroll levels, recent claims history, and their participation in various BWC programs.

A history of BWC rate changes since 2011 can be found online by clicking this link.

Substance Use and Recovery Program

The Substance Use Recovery & Workplace Safety Program (SURWSP) is now available in all 88 counties. This program offers reimbursement to employers for workplace substance use-related expenses like drug testing, training for supervisors and employees, and the development and review of workplace policies. Employers who enroll in the program also get free access to BWC's Better You, Better Ohio workplace wellness program. Maximum reimbursement amounts vary by the type of expense, and restrictions regarding drug testing reimbursement apply.

Although BWC is managing the program directly in most counties, in some counties the program is managed on behalf of BWC by the county Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health (ADAMH) board. A map and complete listing of counties and the separate processes for requesting reimbursement that applies to a county can be found on the Substance Use Recovery & Workplace Safety Program (SURWSP) along with frequently asked questions.
