BWC Update - Purpose, Mission and Programs

The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the December monthly program  ---  BWC Update -- Purpose, Mission; and Program & Activities Highlights --- on Friday, December 14.

The keynote speaker will be Mark J. Clendenin, BWC, Regional Business Development Manager Northeastern Ohio. He serves as the ambassador for the BWC's CEO/Administrator. He works across northeast Ohio not only educating employers on the issues and opportunities as they relate to workers' compensation, but also collaborating with them on strategic solutions.

Clendenin will address the issue of -- Executable Workers' Compensation Solutions for Preventing Undesirable Future Events - along with also discussing several BWC initiatives and topics of special interest. Too frequently he has learned about employer's opportunities for problem prevention or mitigation after the incident already has occurred.

He has more than 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. His background encompasses nearly every aspect of the safety industry, including risk management, public and private accounting, manufacturing, construction, financial services and education.

The presentation is designed to provide attendees with executable solutions to real issues encountered by employers. The goal is to provide solutions to real-life examples presented; to not only provide knowledge, but also to tether that knowledge to cases in order to increase the likelihood of preventing future undesiragble events.

The meeting will be held at the Villa Croatia Event Venue & Party Center (The Croatian Lodge), 34900 Lakeshore Blvd., Eastlake, OH  44095, with registration beginning at 11:15 a.m. The cost of the event is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Reservations may be made online at the LCSC web site listed below. The event is sponsored by:

BWC News & Notes

BWC’s School Safety and Security Grant Program

The BWC recently launched the School Safety and Security Grant (SSSG) Program to help Ohio employers ensure the safety of their staff when carrying out the instructional services they provide to children. The program is for eligible Ohio employers who wish to purchase equipment to substantially improve the safety and security of facilities and to reduce or eliminate injuries or illnesses associated with providing educational services to children.

The SSSG Program is available only to Ohio employers that operate licensed preschool through 12th grade educational facilities. Employers may receive up to $40,000 for the duration of the SSSG Program. This is a 3-to-1 matching grant, which means employers receive $3 for every $1 they contribute. You can review eligibility criteria and apply on our SSSG Program webpage.

Long-Haul Trucker Injuries

The journal Workplace Health and Safety published a paper that uses injury data from a 2010 survey of longhaul

truck drivers. The survey looked at musculoskeletal injuries reported by those surveyed. It found that falls

and contact with an object or equipment were the most common injury cause, and the arm and back were the

most injured body parts. Long-haul drivers are almost four times more likely to have these kinds of injuries.

by a unified code behind the wheel. The theme of the materials is Drive to Arrive Alive. Learn how to use and

customize these free materials, which include a manager sheet, 40 safety messages and a decal.
